These are small and wingless insects that are unique to humans as a host. They feed on blood from the skin on the head. They are a common problem to small children though youths and the old may be victims. Their presence cause irritation and itchiness, which calls for scratching that can cause infection at the scalp. The best thing about Lice is that though they are annoying, they cannot spread any diseases.

Signs and symptoms of Head Lice

Though tiny, they can still be seen except for the fact that it is not that easy. An adult may have a tan or greyish colour with a size of almost 3mm. Since they move fast, one may see their eggs easily as compared to them.

The eggs are known as nits. The nits resemble dandruff though they cannot easily fall during the brushing of the hair as compared to dandruff. The nits are found attached to the hair close to the head's skin cover, which makes the hair look like they have oval lumps.

Another simple way of finding whether one has Lice is that they will have an itchy feeling around the skin of the head which may lead to red lumps arising from the body's reaction towards their saliva during the blood-sucking process. Treatment of Lice

They can be controlled or treated in two different ways as follows:

Through medication

On finding out that one has lice in their hair; a doctor can be visited advice on how to deal with the situation. The doctor may opt for the use of shampoos, lotion, or even rinsing cream to kill the lice. Since lice are insects, they can be controlled by the use of insecticides and also pesticides. The use of pesticides requires careful regulation and attention to how much of it a person should use and for what period. Most medicated lice cases kill the lice though the itch on the bitten areas may take a little while to stop.

Through physical removal by hand methods

The doctor may also advocate for the removal by hand in which wet combing may be used as an alternative or combined with the various chemical treatment methods recommended. This usually acts as a backup to the medication method as it may not be fully effective. For lice and nits removal, a wet brush having fine tooth-like bristles may be used on conditioned hair for 4 days in three weeks from when lice were witnessed. The process of making the hair wet ensures the lice are immobilized while the conditioner makes it easy to brush the hair.

The use of various petroleum products such as petroleum jelly may help eradicate head lice by suffocating them, which also turns out to be less effective as this only applies to adult lice. The physical removal of head lice takes time as one has to spend 3 weeks brushing the hair, which might be tedious because a helping hand is needed to help in combing the hair.
