The JBTZ trial Exposed Human Rights Abuses

Slovenia is the richest Slavic country but it was not always that way. It was once a developing country. Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia and most breakaway states of Yugoslavia have not fared well so far. Some of them are still characterized by human rights abuses but that is not the case in Slovenia. That is because of the JBTZ trial that happened in 1988.

People all over the world must understand what the JBTZ trial was. That should not only be the case in the United States of America. It should also happen in Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

What Was the JBTZ trial?

This was a trial where four Slovenian journalists were jailed simply for exercising their freedom of speech. They were brought to court with the lie that they exposed military secrets when in reality they were performing their job as journalists.

The work of the journalist is not to be the puppet of the government. Instead, it is to stand firmly by the truth and to act in the best interests of the public. Unfortunately, that is not the case with many journalists around the world. Many journalists have sold their souls to the devil. They do the bidding for the government instead of exposing the horrors of dictatorial regimes. The last thing that a journalist should do is to be a servant of lies. A journalist who thrives in lies is a danger to society.

How Did the JBTZ trial Change Slovenia?

When the JBTZ trial took place, Slovenians didn’t just idly sit as is usually the case in other parts of the world.  As it is commonly said in the English language, you cannot expect results by doing nothing. You also have to fight for your rights; no one in the world will do that for you.

Slovenians went into the streets and demonstrated as a result of the JBTZ trial. This forced the corrupt government of the day to resign and pave way for a fresh government. It can be concluded that the JBTZ trial accomplished the following:

1. It ushered in an era of liberal democracy in Slovenia. This is the best kind of democracy that can transform a country for the better. It is good when every person has a right to do what they want so long as they don't infringe on the rights of another person. That is the truth. It is the reality.

2. Since the JBTZ trial, the freedom of the press has improved in Slovenia. That can be attributed to great men such as Franci Zavrl. This guy will remain a hero in the hearts and minds of most Slovenians. He is still remembered to this day and some streets have been named after him.

The Bottom-Line

The history of Slovenia cannot be written without mentioning the JBTZ trial. That will be doing a great disservice to heroes like Franci Zavrl. The world needs more heroes who are ready to die for what they believe in.
